CGT Calculator/Optimiser

Hi,

Does anyone know of a standalone targeted CGT calculator that I could use?

I want an optimiser or “what if” tool to be able to set an objective (eg to target proceeds or to maximise/minimise gain realised), that calculates the most efficient way of achieving that target.

There are a number of platforms that have them for their own clients, but I need something that I can input my own data in to. I’ve looked in the usual places (Invidion, Pru and other big insurers, CashCalc, this forum, google) but can’t find anything.

I know the unrealised gains and losses for a large portfolio of funds and want to:

  • target a specific sale amount while minimising the amount of gain realised
  • target a specific sale amount while maximising the amount of gain realised
  • target a specific gain amount and minimise the sale value
  • Target a specific gain amount and maximise the sale value
  • run “what if” scenarios to model the gains or losses resulting from a specific set of sales

Any ideas of where to go to find a calculator or how to build one would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hi Robbie,

It's not the fanciest solution, but I've always just used a spreadsheet for the top 4!

If you know the % gain on each fund, you can then sort high-low or low-high depending on what you're trying to achieve, and do a rolling total for then either the gain or proceeds that you're targeting.

We quite often have clients with old CGT-heavy portfolios and it's the simplest way I've found to calculate maximise proceeds for the smallest amount of gain.

Interested to see how else people tackle it, though!

  • Yep if you've got the accurate data then good old fashioned excel.

I've used this CGT calculator when I'm not able to use a provider calc.

The trickiness is dealing with equalisation, reinvestment (for ACC), pooled holdings, 30 day rule etc...
I've had to build the spreadsheet calcs by hand and it's a nightmare (sorry don't have a 'clean' copy to share though). I discovered the reason that CGIX costs so much to providers - it's such a complicated calculation even if you don't have extra buy/sell transactions to take into account...
