Studying in the USA

We have a client who has a granddaughter who is about to commence studies at university in California.
Does anyone have any idea what her tax status will be or know of anyone good to talk to about this sort of thing?
I've asked what type of visa she will be studying under but I haven't had a reply yet.

Don't want to state the obvious, but intrigued to hear the answer myself... why would the residency for tax status differ to anybody else who was abroad?
I thought she would be subject to residents test like an adult working abroad?
