Client approaches for new business

Hi. Ok, first day on the job and calling a few local IFAs. I haven't really got a clue what to say to these people, only asked the admins if they have an in-house paraplanning function but then one of them asked me to send an email.

My question is: what do you (or did you) say to potential new clients which will make sure your email gets seen and not immediately binned? Also, what do you say to people on the phone?

My apologies if this sounds like really basic stuff, but I've been employed up until now and not had to sell me or my services (job interviews don't count!)

I can't offer you any help with this as I am in-house and pretty clueless about this sort of thing but I do wish you all the best!

  • We are in-house, but when I get emails from providers if they have something interesting and insightful to share I will generally take a look. If it is just another pitch then it probably won't get much attention. Perhaps have some interesting content/comment that will engage them and follow up?
You might find something helpful to consider in the latest Kitces & Carl podcast (https://www.kitces.com/blog/podcast-topic/kitces-carl/) - you will have to apply it to outsourcing as they are talking more about client emails.
Good luck on your new venture

  • I agree with Dan. If you've got the right person to send the email to, it will definitely be seen and if there's something for the wider audience that's caught the eye, it will also be passed on.

Give them something useful in the email to show what you can do and let that open the doors for you.
