Hi everyone I had a telephone interview for a Paraplanner role and they said that on top of the Paraplanner technical test at interview, they would also do a Microsoft Office test as I wrote ‘Fully competent in Microsoft Office suite’ on my CV. Any idea what that would involve, please? Have any of you had a Microsoft Office test as part of an interview selection process? I imagine it’s doing fancy stuff with excel, as well as mail merge, formatting headings in Word which I can do. Many thanks in advance.

Just wondering how you all "sense check" your own reports. I'm always conscious that because of the volume of reports I do that the likelihood of a mistake popping up during the original draft is fairly reasonable. But I find that reading my own report back it can be hard sometimes to notice where errors may lie.

We have looked at a few provider offerings and they seem to be 1) Tailored to the products that they offer or 2) overly simplistic. Ideally I would like something that is sophisticated enough to be able to cope with things like increased child care costs etc. I appreciate that a good cashflow should enable us to pin this down but I dont want to be doing a full cashflow for every transactional mortgage client.

Good evening,

I'm hoping for your help.

When it comes to recommending a DFM does anyone have a best practice guide on how to layout the charges for the advice?

E.g.

Initial advice charges
Ongoing advice charges
DFM charge
Vat on DFM
Expected/estimated DFM underlying portfolio costs.

I've heard of some advice firms not quoting the expected/estimated cost of the underlying portfolio managed by the DFM but unsure if that is actually compliant or not.

Also, is there a maximum ongoing charge you tend to stay clear off?

I'm off the opinion the lesser the costs to the client the better however don't normally mind mixing a passive and active fund or having a low cost active fund for the client.

With DFM the costs increase by a fair amount and was trying to find out what maximum cost advisers/Paraplanners tend to avoid e.g. 2% total ongoing costs for the client (inclusive of all ongoing advice costs, DFM costs and vat, and underlying portfolio costs for example).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi there

In addition to my sketchy knowledge on bonds (thanks everyone for their help and input on that one!), I've also not done much in the way of fund selection. I've done a fair amount of research on clients' existing holdings and how they would compare to another portfolio, but I've been given this brief, and, to be completely honest, I have no idea where to start:

"I’d like to put together an advice record for £350k of cash held within his FPI portfolio bond which is held within his Malta QROPS, perhaps split between 3 low-cost ETFs"

I have another client looking for low cost ESG investments too.

I lost my fund research guru last year and I used to lean heavily on him for this sort of work as it's his strength and he enjoyed it, and now I need to find a way of learning how to do this myself.

I have access to FE analytics but I feel it's a case of "all the gear but no idea!"

Any tips/suggestions, and resources to refer to would be massively appreciated!

Morning, I am looking to gauge everyones thoughts how to approach an analysis on Select A Pension correctly.

I would input the ceding scheme details etc, then go to Product Features where I would choose the appropriate filters, then next screen I would tick ALL PROVIDERS AND ALL Products for the analysis.

This will then run the analysis and bring up all providers using their default funds (which to me isn't correct for the purpose of the analysis). So for example, Aegon, Fidelity and Canada Life maybe above Royal London who are 4th (as an example). The recommended provider I would go with is Royal London, therefore just completely ignoring the first 3.

However, does anyone run based on the investment selection first? therefore when getting to the analysis, this would only bring up the providers who offer that investment selection?

Many Thanks

Hi, talking is always best I know - but I'm thinking a standard report request sheet might be useful to initiate the process, so we can start research/analysis upfront and then talk through the output before ploughing into full suitability report. I was wondering if anyone out there has one they are using, or ideas on what works for them.

I am the first in-house paraplanner at my current firm and am looking at ways to get the advisers to start using me efficiently, also it could help with structuring the process a little better. I'm finding that they are still doing a lot of the things I should be doing - i.e. ask me to proceed with a report, so I do the illustrations to find out that they've already gone ahead and done them themselves!!!

In past role Advisers completed meeting notes, which had action points at the end which defined Admin requirements and PP requirements so I always had an idea of what was coming at me...

Peoples thoughts and current processes in other businesses might be useful, thanks

Hi

We seem to be having a lot of discussions with clients surrounding the trade off between LTA tax charge and future IHT liabilities.

Does any one use any tools or calculators to demonstrate this to clients. Which could illustrate phasing drawdown, leaving uncrystallised, crystallising up to LTA etc

Thank you

Hi all

Very interested to hear your thoughts on money laundering a corporation/employer, when they have agreed to pay/divert pension contributions from an employees company pension into a SIPP we run.

I've seen varying levels of detail for money laundering companies in this manner:
- Full AML on every director - online checks, or passports/driving licence/bank statements
- Details of shareholders with interest over 25%
- Company headed paper

Clearly, for large corporations money laundering every director is completely prohibitive.

What's the thoughts on here of best practice and how do you all look to work around this?

Hi all,

As the title suggests, I need help with creating an excel spreadsheet please.

I am wanting to create an excel spreadsheet which quickly shows where a clients existing portfolio asset allocation is in comparison to their suggested asset allocation from the ATR questionnaire.

At the moment this is done manually, which can be rather painful.

Any tips and guidance would be very much appreciated

Hi - I'm looking for a pension withdrawal emergency tax calculator and a few of the providers have one, however they assume that 25% will be tax free. That's all very well, but not helpful when the PCLS has already been taken

I'm trying to build a calculator instead but was wondering whether anyone else has one they would be willing to share (I'm getting a bit tied up in knots with the formulae in excel!)
